“Ghosts” sets players in an alternate-future America that’s been crippled by a government in disarray. The Ghosts are remnants of the various branches of the Special Forces. They’ve adopted the best fighting techniques from these branches as they battle across an array of terrains and environments. Also new to the franchise is an interactive dog, which the developers created with the latest performance-capture technology. The dog promises to be a loyal and important companion throughout the game’s campaign. This being a “Call of Duty” game, there will also be new multiplayer gameplay to entice players to log in and take on friends from around the world on Xbox Live and PlayStation Network. “Call of Duty: Ghosts” adds dynamic maps, including natural events such as floods and earthquakes and player-activated obstacles such as doors and explosive traps. We sat down with Hirshberg to talk about what opportunities next-gen consoles will open up for gamers. Here’s an edited version of our interview: CNN: What will define what next-generation gaming is this fall? Hirshberg: It’s interesting. If you look into what’s happened in culture, not just in gaming but overall in culture over the last seven years that this current gen has represented, the way that we communicate, the way that we consume entertainment, the way that we connect socially through digital spheres has completely transformed during that exact time period. The current-gen games like “Call of Duty” had something to do with that. They were the tip of the sword. Playing multiplayer in “Call of Duty” is probably one of the first mass things that people did together in a digital environment. Now we do almost everything together in a digital environment. All of those ways to connect with the devices in your pockets and being able to comment on everything, categorize everything and rank everything, hasn’t really made its way into gaming yet.
For that reason, Activision has put in place a variety of options for players to make the transition from current to next-gen as easy and cost effective for everyone. The biggest and seemingly most interesting way to make sure you get both experiences is with the new Xbox Game Ahead program. You can pre-order a digital version of both the Xbox 360 and Xbox One versions of Ghosts for a one-time fee of $69.99. Both games will be tied to your specific gamer profile, meaning youll be able to download both versions as soon as they become available. More details on this option will be made available later. Additionally, you could just buy the digital version on Xbox Live for the 360 when it drops on Nov. 5 for $59.99, and then just pay $10 more when you get an Xbox One and want to download the new version of Ghosts. The same is true of the disc copy, for which multiple retailers have incentives in place. Retailers will also have the same options available for the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4 disc-based copies. Sony too will allow you to pay $10 more for the PlayStation 4 digital copy if you already have a version of Ghosts for the PS3. However, there is no similar plan to the one-time fee available on the Xbox consoles. You can get more details on the official Call of Duty: Ghosts site . Ghosts will be out on Nov. 5 for PC and current gen systems, with the PS4 getting it on Nov. 12, and the Xbox One getting it on Nov. 22.
Activision Reveals ‘Call of Duty: Ghosts’ Next-Gen Upgrade Details
Chances are pretty high that many of the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 gamers in that group will end up buying a next-gen machine long before they are ready to call it quits on Call of Duty: Ghosts . With those fans in mind, Activision has announced the official details for its next-gen upgrade options. Details on how the upgrades will work are slightly different depending on whether you are going from Xbox 360 to Xbox One or PS3 to PS4 . Heres how things will break down for each of the options For a limited period of time, all PS3 copies of Call of Duty: Ghosts will include a redeemable code that will allow players to purchase a digital copy of the PS4 version of Ghosts for $10. Digital copies of the game purchased through the PlayStation Store will automatically be eligible for the next-gen upgrade. If you are interested in the PS4 upgrade, you will need to redeem your code no later than March 31, 2014. UK and European gamers will also get a chance to upgrade PS3 physical copies to PS4 physical copies for $10 thanks to special offers from Game (UK) and GameStop. No similar options for future Sony PS4 owners in North America have been detailed yet. Microsoft is offering a package deal for both the Xbox 360 and Xbox One versions of Ghosts as part of its Game Ahead program. The offer is digital only and has a suggested retail price of $69.99. Customers looking to go all-digital also have the option of picking up the Xbox 360 copy through the Xbox Games Store and then later upgrading to the Xbox One version for an additional $10. Consumers transitioning from Xbox 360 to Xbox One will also have the opportunity to upgrade through a variety of special programs being offered by Amazon, Best Buy, or GameStop. Most of these offers are only valid through December 31, so shoppers will need to act quickly before the holiday season wraps up. Lastly, Activision confirmed that any consumers who purchase the Call of Duty: Ghosts season pass before March 31, 2014 will receive a next-gen upgrade as part of the package. The season pass costs $49.99 and will include four DLC map packs and the Team Leader digital content pack. The first-person shooter was designed with fun over innovation in mind , so if all goes according to plan gamers should still have plenty of motivation to continue pouring hours into the title after they upgrade consoles. With plenty of options to choose from, its safe to say that Activision is working hard to provide a seamless transition into the next-gen era for Call of Duty fans. Do you think $10 is a fair price to switch over to your new console of choice? ____________ Call of Duty: Ghosts releases November 5, 2013 for the PC, PS3, Wii U, and Xbox 360. The PS4 version will follow on November 15 and the Xbox One version on November 22.
